Blah blah blog about photography and such.

Family photography in "Urban" Salt Lake

So you have a client in Salt Lake that says they want something "urban" in their shoot.

Or YOU'RE a client in Salt Lake that says to themselves "Hey, I want something Urban on my family shoot."  Well, there is a spot I love for just that.

Just North East of the corner or Main and 400 South in Downtown Salt Lake is a little spot which (judging by the number of photographers I've come across) is not secret to local photographers, but is a great little spot to shoot a family with a variety of backgrounds and lighting possibilities.

Best to go there on Sunday if possible as parking is a bear, and there are fewer passersby.

If you're not sure where this is, think Green Pig Pub... which is a great place to tell people to meet you (inside if no kids are involved... a cold beer can loosen you up just enough for a casual shoot).

What I like to do is start as the columns on the north side of the Exchange Place Building...

The texture on these columns is great for black and white.  I know, this shot is not black and white, but trust me!

Then you can move just east up against the building with this clasic brick and paint...

Why are old brick walls with peeling paint so awesome?  I don't know.  They just are.

After this, hope right across the street to these steps...

I notice a lot of photographers have their clients sit on these steps... but I don't really see it.

Then just head east and around the corner there is this fun little window...

A cozy window, makes a great spot to focus on the kids.

and finally, the spot my clients generally like the most, the stinky dark alley... seriously.  This may not seem like much to folks from the big city, but dark, stinky alleyways are sort of a rarity around here.  And this one is freakin' awesome! Just make sure to bring a few speedlites.

When you client asks to get a shot of home "poppin" and you say, "What the hell is that?" and he does this.
